P.D. has maintained tables carrying the petitions in the centre of town at lunch-time each day for the past fortnight. A public rally and picket will be held in front of the City Hall at 3 p.m. on Saturday 12th September. bince the campaign started ,just over a fortnight ago, we have held public meetings, pickets, and have collected over 19000 signatures for our petition.
The main theme of the campaign has. centered around the large profits being made out of the city buses by London Banks and the favouritism, shown towards private transport over the public buses by the Corporation's Transport policy.
The Corporation nave tried to counter our campaign by making outlandish statements such as that if the buses were financed from the rates, there would be no way of turning down busmen* pay demands ‘Our answer to that is 1) Other Corploration workers are paid from the lrates, and it has not put their wages up very much, and 2) It would do no lharm if busmen had better wages: ‘at the present time the only drivers bringing home good wages are those 'who do long hours of overtime.
