* For a United Independent Ireland Complete British Withdrawal Against Collaboration * Defence of Workers’ Living Standards Against Austerity Give Working People Control of the Nation’s Wealth * Defence of Democratic and Civil Rights * Complete Opposition to Imperialist Alliances No to NATO — Out of the EEC AT ITS NATIONAL Conference in November, Peoples Democracy pinpointed the electoral arena as having a real potential for the advance of the anti-imperialist movement over the Last year’s General Election allowed all those who supported the hunger strikers’ demands to express their anger at British policy and Free State collaboration. The election provided a focus for the prisoners’ supporters to work together for the five demands.
Anti-imperialist organisations, youth, women, students and trade unionists all sunk their differences amongst themselves to deal with the pressing issue of trying to save the hunger It is important that the lessons of unity learned last year are not forgotten.
The hunger strike may be over, but Ireland is still very much in a state of crisis. The British Army and Loyalist assassins daily threaten the very lives of Nationalist people in the Six Counties, whilst in the 26 Counties the working class is being made to pay for an economic crisis not of its own making. The situation demands that those who supported the hunger with Britain imperialist intervention in the General Election last June. The election of Kieran Doherty and Paddy Agnew ensured that Fianna Fail could not form a government and that Fine Gael had to cobble together a creaky Coalition of themselves and the so-called socialists and independents. The coming General Election holds out the prospect of unity on an agreed programme for all anti-imperialists. Peoples Democracy believes that the anti-imperialist organisations have an opportunity and responsibility to intervene in this stiuation and offer the people of Ireland a real alternative. The formation of an anti-imperialist united front to contest all elections, especially the general election, is a logical and urgent development of the H Block/Armagh campaign. This united front would build on and extend the gains of mass united action won while defending the prisoners. We therefore call on Sinn Fein, the Irish Republican Socialist Party and all other anti-imperialist individuals and groupings to combine with PD and Bernadette McAlis] ev to present a real alternati ‘e to the ; ‘o-Britisia and anti-workiag class policies of the major parties in this General Election.
PEOPLES DEMOCRACY is an anti-imperialist socialist organisation which puts the unity of Ireland as the first task to be met by socialists in every part of Ireland.
