Chief among the victims of the current rate of inflation of prices is the housewive. If the worker is being hit by the erosive action of inflation, it is the housewife who is certainly being hammered by an inflation rate which has doubled over the past two years. A closer look at the Consumer Price Index reveals that currently the price increases in food and clothing amount to 40% of the total inflation rate. These are the primary items which the working class housewife forks out for in her role as a cook, administrator, nurse and cleaner in the modern nuclear family unit. The working class movement cannot ignore her position as being peripheral to the “‘main” class struggle that it is fighting today. To do so would be to ignore an aspect of the crisis which can have far reaching effects. Up to May of this year, the price of food has risen by 79% since 1968. Clothing has taken an even higher jump up to an 83% increase. Not being directly involved in the system of production a housewife has no control over spiralling inflation except by way of her husband’s pay packet. While in practice this does give her an outlet through pay rises etc. to exract from her husband some of the difference to 1nake up for increases in prices, it still leavers her with no independent means of protection for herself against inflation. Her situation arises from the fact that each family is an atomised unit separated from its counterpart and subject to individual manipulation by the forces of mass advertising. Thus the housewife is separated from her natural ally in the fight against rising prices and forced to make individual cuts in the standard of living of her family. In this situation the familv becomes an isolated consumer trap which leaves the housewife an easy prey for reactionary "ideology and solutions to the present situation e.g. the incident at Cowley in England where the wives of strikers came out openly for the “We should immediately set a date for the We must also withdraw politically and economically the Irish people. : t from what is our oldest colony.” What.we need is a massive campaign to demahd —Joan Maynard that the troops get out (
